Unfortunately its stoat season again, litters are born during December/January. We have caught three stoats at the reserve very recently, one caught was hopefully the culprit for two seabird carcasses just above Peach Cove Hut and is no longer killing. The other was on the main ridge above the hut, and this one in the picture was on the boundary at the western end of the main reserve. What is cool about the one in the photo is that it has been caught in one of the new Steve Allan traps we have recently installed in the boundary intensification network. These are such an awesome trap and are designed to kill feral cats but also do a blimmin great job of catching possums, stoats and even rats - all all round mighty good trap!!
Hopefully we have taken out all the stoats in our reserve for now so our species are safer, however I am aware this is probably not the case and more may be caught over the coming weeks. Our trapping team is on high alert and working hard to keep the traps in tip top shape over this festive season and into the new year.
